Oscar Pérez; Venezuelan Hero

Oscar Perez (36), once part of the Venezuelan police, and now a “terrorist” for the country’s government, was killed past January 16,2018 due to his revolutionary initiative.

In the early morning of January 16, the Venezuelan authorities killed the man that had returned  hope to many civilians. Oscar Perez was buried naked, with one white sheet wrapped around his wounded body.  Once an actor, police man, and a terrorist for the country, Perez died fighting for his people and a new Venezuela.

Perez filmed numerous videos where he accused the government in regards to the country’s situation, and also encouraged  people to join his armed group, which seeked justice. He spoke to the New York Times during his last days, and talked about his goals.

“I fight for the freedom of the country, for a better tomorrow,” he began one afternoon in early January, speaking over a messaging application. “The fear of dying is what I have least now. It’s not the fear of death, but the fear of failure, of failing the people.”

Meanwhile, this situation has been terrifying for many civilians, which have fled the country in search of safety and economic stability. Diego Adolfo Hinojosa, current student of The Columbus School and former Venezuelan citizen talks about his experience.

“My dad had to bring toilet paper from his business trips because there was none at Venezuela… stores were running out of products… I am extremely thankful for leaving before things got worse and [more] violent.” said Hinojosa with a sigh.

The Discoverer had the opportunity to communicate with a former Venezuelan resident, who moved to Medellín in 2017, Rosana Tigrera. She is a current applicant for a position as a teacher in the Columbus School and she tells us about the country’s actual situation.

“More than an influence, I think Perez was a result of the crisis in Venezuela… I support having the courage to stand up for what you believe in, but it is important not to sacrifice your ideals to achieve your ends.” said Tigrera.

In conclusion, Oscar Perez can be judged by his actions, or worshipped as a hero for the people. He stood up for his beliefs and fought for a better Venezuela. Very few, feel comfortable talking about this topic and many people interviewed refused to comment. However, the spirit of Perez lives on.
