NHS Steps Up With New Board for 2017-2018
The NHS elections for next year’s student board were held June 1st, NHS members voted using electronic ballot.
The new NHS board members for the 2017-2018 school year are Carolina Penagos, President, Susana Mejia, Vice President, Camila Duque, Secretary, Manuel Escobar, Treasurer and Mariana Salazar, Communicator.
“If the new representatives follow their campaign promises, which two of them already did, I think that NHS could Improve a lot.” Sebastian Eusse, 12th grade NHS member, said.
Carolina Penagos and Susana Mejia already started their campaign promises by organizing fundraisers, as well as planning next year’s activities such as The NHS Induction Ceremony for new members, Teacher’s Day celebration, and Día de la Familia activities.
“One of the most important things that could improve, is the way NHS handles new members. I think this new group can teach the new members how to properly become a member instead of just letting them figure out on their own,” Eusse, said.
One of Penagos’s main priorities is to improve their contact with new NHS members. Last year there was an issue in which many of the new members weren’t added to the whatsapp group, so they weren’t aware of any events or activities.
“I think that my campaign started a year ago when I went for the board position of communicator and I didn’t win at the moment but I got involved in many other NHS activities,” Penagos, said.
During the fourth quarter, Penagos took over the role of communicator because there was a lack of effective communication and NHS members did not know about meetings, or events.
“There was a big lack of communication because of our issue with the previous communicator before I took over, no one knew what was really going on, and it was all very foggy,” Penagos, said.
Another of Penagos’ goals is to strengthen the values of NHS since some members don’t really understand the responsibility and commitment it takes to be part of the NHS community.
According to the National Honor Society web page,“Members also must participate in chapter and individual service projects to benefit the school and community.”
Penagos’ plans on being on top of NHS this year. After the Induction Ceremony every new member will be added to the chat, also NHS will have monthly meetings or communications to keep track of every NHS member’s responsibilities.
“Many students who are in NHS don’t really know what it means, they just do their service because they have to meet a certain time of hours and that is not right,” Penagos, said.
