New Instruments Needed for Band Classes

A lack of musical instruments in Columbus School High School band classes is making it a struggle for students to develop their musical skills.

Despite assigning money on maintenance for the school´s instruments, students complain that they still have to share instruments because of damage or careless users whom they share the instruments with.

The High School Band class was directed with a budget to save some of the older instruments that were damaged the most.

Nevertheless, students like 11th grader, Isabel Calle, desire new and improved musical instruments given the fact that they get damaged in the process of sharing them with other students.

“I think it’s good for the school to make the instruments clean, but it makes me really mad that the instruments keep getting damaged because of people not handling them with ease,” Calle said.

Calle also mentioned that she feels that the lack of instruments and having to share them means the Columbus School’s musical performances are not up to par with other schools.

“We have been to concerts with other schools and they have lots of new instruments and the music they are playing is ten times better.” Calle said

Manuela Betancourt, a high school band student, also complained about the uncomfortable feeling of disgust that sharing instruments like trumpets and saxophones involve.

“For some instruments, you are blowing into the same part that others, and it’s gross because you don’t want to share saliva with somebody that you don’t know”, Betancourt said.

Band class needs more attention from the school, musical performance depends on that.

“Last year we lost a teacher because they said they had no money to pay for the teacher,” Calle said.
