A TCS defender challenges an opponent from Cumbres during the futbal final of Copa Montessori on September 23. Columbus won the match 1-0.

The TCS Boys High School Futbol Team was victorious twice in Copa Montessori on September 23 winning championships in both the 2006 and 2007 age groups.

In the finals, the 2007 team defeated Cumbres 1-0  while the 2006 team beat Montessori on penalties 4-0 after coming from behind to tie the game 3-3.  The tournament format was 8 0n 8 with two 30-minute periods.

“I believe that the pressure of playing in the Montessori field had a negative impact because all the people were cheering for Montessori and we were afraid of making mistakes and losing against the local team,” Arrubla, said.

In the 2007 final, both teams played with 1-3-2-2 formations and Pedro Juan Navarro scored the winning goal. In the qualifying stage, TCS lost to Cumbres 2-1, and beat Canadiense and Montessori by identical 1-0 scores.

“I scored the goal that took us to penalties in the final so I was very excited because all of us have worked very hard for this,“ Pedro Juan Navarro, Grade 10 striker, said.

In  the qualifying stage on Wednesday the 2006 team defeated Cumbres 1-0, Vermont 3-2, San Lucas 3-0 and lost against Montessori 2-1. In the final against Montessori, Tomás Arrubla, Emilio Mesa, and Navarro scored the goals that tied the match.

“I value teamwork very much and what has been trained is reflected in the matches. The muscle memory of the player and the team has been reflected, and it was very important to work as close as possible to the real game,” Urbano Mesa, TCS HS soccer Head Coach, said.

After scoring seven goals and playing both striker and in goal, Navarro was named the tournament MVP.

“I believe Pedro Juan was a fundamental player for the team thanks to the two goals he scored in the finals. I am amazed and very satisfied with how hard Navarro worked in the tournament,” Arrubla said.

The teamwork shown by The Columbus School team demonstrated the quality of the players. Urbano has been focusing on developing teamwork, and that was shown in the two finals at Copa Montessori.

“I was very happy that we all were friends in the team because it helped us push each other to our limits and eventually reach the goal we all wanted to achieve successfully,” Navarro said.
