For years, Columbus School seniors have embraced the tradition of getting wacky haircuts before their long-awaited senior trip to San Andrés. This year, the trend has taken on a life of its own, with students sporting everything from lightning bolts to checkerboard patterns.
“It’s more than just a crazy haircut—it’s a symbol of how we’re all in this together, making memories before we go our separate ways,” senior Jeronimo Serrano said.
The tradition has become a rite of passage for Columbus School seniors, fostering class unity and serving as a bold expression of individuality. Some students meticulously plan their designs, while others leave it up to their barbers to surprise them with something unique.
“I got the idea from TikTok—there was this guy who shaved lightning bolts into his hair, and I thought it was bold and fun,” senior Miguel Sanin said.
While some students see the haircuts as a lighthearted way to stand out, others attach a more personal meaning to their designs.
“I picked a design that represents something important to me—waves—because the ocean has always been my happy place,” senior Samuel Zuñiga said.
The wacky haircut tradition has also sparked reactions from teachers, classmates, and even strangers outside of school. Some have praised the creativity, while others have been caught off guard by the dramatic transformations.
“One of my teachers called me ‘Thor’ for the lightning bolts, which was hilarious,” Sanin said.
Despite initial nerves about committing to such daring looks, many seniors agree that the experience has been well worth it. Whether through matching designs, bold colors, or completely unexpected styles, the tradition continues to be a defining moment for each graduating class.
“Don’t overthink it—just go for it! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and you won’t regret it,” Zuñiga said.
As the senior class prepares for their final trip together, their haircuts serve as a reminder of the bold and adventurous spirit that has defined their time at Columbus School. This tradition, though temporary, leaves a lasting impression on students and the memories they take with them beyond graduation.
Beyond the fun, some seniors reflect on the deeper meaning behind the tradition. It’s not just about the haircuts, but about stepping outside of their comfort zones and embracing the excitement of the moment. The tradition has grown over the years, with each class adding its unique twist to the experience.
“We’ve seen everything from mohawks to neon-colored designs, and every year, it just gets crazier,” Serrano said. “It’s something that bonds us as a class before we go off to different universities and new adventures.”
Whether students opt for intricate patterns or simple, goofy styles, the wacky haircut tradition at Columbus School continues to be a testament to the seniors’ camaraderie and willingness to make the most of their last year together.
