The TCS High School is welcoming a new Learning Center Teacher Felipe Gaviria who arrived on January 11 and will work with students in mathematics and science.

In the learning center, if someone has trouble in a class Gaviria will help students to understand better. In addition, Gaviria also works as a substitute if a teacher is missing. During this week Gaviria was a substitute in classes like Algebra and Physics.

“I think he’s good at working with teenagers. I think he’s capable of listening to understand what they need help, and helping in everything they need,” Amalia Molina, Gaviria´s coworker said.

Gaviria has tutored Columbus School students before and applied for a job teaching physics, but got into the learning center since Susana Arias head of the Learning Center was at the meeting.

“Susana was there during the meeting, and she asked me if I was interested in the opening part of the Learning Center, which I really like because I think it’s a better transition from business to school,” Gaviria said.

Gaviria has been working at the school at Learning Center since January 11. He has been working with Amalia Molina and Susana Arias. He is just getting to know students but he is adapting well to the school.

“My boss, which is Susana Arias, was sick at the moment. I was with Amalia, who is the nicest person and she started introducing me to all the things we do in the Learning Center. I’m learning a lot of things for example names, I ask everyone every time,” Gaviria said.

Felipe studied operations engineering at EAFIT and earned an MBA at the Universidad de Antioquia. Gaviria is excited about the change after working with corporations and is looking forward to a new challenge.

“I was tired of working for corporations and I think working with students is a more meaningful career than working for corporations. I used to tutor the students in physics, calculus, and things like that,” Gaviria said.

Gaviria already knew some students from the school because he worked as a tutor but he has felt the school has welcomed him. The transition from business to school is a really big thing but Gaviria has felt the school has made it much easier for him.

“Most of the students are really nice. I think all of them are really kind. They’re always willing to help me if I need something and have made it a good transition,” Gaviria said.

Gaviria saw from teachers around how their schedules were so good and he felt that he need this change, he was tired of the corporations and felt that he would fit in better in a school environment.

“Also, I was with my partner traveling and she is a teacher, so she has the teacher’s schedule I use to work and she was on vacation so I got tired of that, so I switched my career to teaching,” Gaviria said.
