The school cafeteria has tried to go sustainable with programs on reducing waste, increasing recycling, and utilizing well-biodegradable products. The question is, is this enough to help the environment?
The school cafeteria is trying to become more eco-friendly by reducing waste, recycling, and using biodegradable products. However, many students aren’t aware of these changes. More student education might help improve the effectiveness of these efforts, although it will take work. Because this initiative is essential, raising awareness among the students is very important. But without participation, the goals may not be achieved.
“We separate the garbage into organic wastes and normal trash. Organic wastes are sent to a certain company, and the remaining trash is recycled,” Biviana Caro, Cafeteria Manager, said.
The cafeteria has also replaced a lot of biodegradable products.
“All the soaps we use are biodegradable and most disposable items, like plates and cups, are too,” Caro said.
TCS cafeteria doesn’t use harmful materials like Styrofoam anymore, and only some things. Still, they stopped providing covers for cappuccino drinks so as not to use even more plastic.
Even though these changes have been made within the cafeteria, students remain in the dark, concerning these changes.,
“I didn’t know the cafeteria had recycling bins, but I’m glad they do now,” Santiago Lopez, senior, said.
It just proves that not all are informed concerning the eco-friendly changes; it could affect the effectiveness of the program.
“It is good for our school to be more eco-friendly and protect the environment,” Lopez said.
Another problem the cafeteria faces is concerning their reusable plates. Biviana Caro, Cafeteria Manager, made it known that the students tend to either break or lose the plates.
“This is a problem because when the plates get broken, they become trash and pollute the environment,” Caro said.
The fact that the cafeteria is reusing items to reduce waste, the students must be more conscious of it and take better care.
It’s when the whole school can be more involved that such programs will continue to work even better.
“It’s when students care about these issues, the efforts mean more,” Lopez, senior, said.
The cafeteria would also hope students can be more responsible in terms of recycling and treating the dishes well. Education from teachers and the school can help.
The cafeteria is trying its best, yet it could be even more improved. Maybe other schools do this even better and have great recycling systems. Possibly TCS could teach the students a bit more about recycling and its meanings, so then the school could all be on the same page and make the community even greener.
“It is great we think about the environment, but we need more effort from everybody,” Lopez, Senior, said.
