New 7th Grade STUCO Representative has Big Plans

Rosario Navarro, 7th grade STUCCO representative, has been working to improve 7th grade, with the help of the principal and teachers of the Columbus School Middle School, since she was elected September 14 .

The STUCCO representative is chosen by the students in each grade, to serve as their voice and fight for their rights as students of The Columbus School. STUCCO part of the TCS student council which work with the Personero. Rosario Navarro won the STUCCO elections for the 2016-17 school year besting six other candidates.

“Ever since I was a little kid I have been interested in helping people, and when I saw the option of become part of STUCCO, I just knew that was the way. So I made a campaign and won!” Rosario Navarro, 7th grade STUCCO representative, said.

Rosario has been involved in helping society for a long time, and believes in justice between faculty and students. By creating a campaign with her friends and some teachers, such as William Duque, she has  reached her goal and has started working for her classmates.

“I voted for her because she is the nicest girl I know and really cares for our grade. It’s hard to make a change, I but  have seen her talking with some teachers about her ideas,” Elisa Aristizabal, 7th grader, said.

The homework load in 7th grade is challenging for students, many of them don’t even have time to practice extracurricular activities. She wants to start a new policy where teacher can only send two homework assignments per week.

“I want a homework policy where students learn but have the opportunity of doing other things on their own time, such as extracurricular activities,” Navarro said.

She has been working with teachers to establish this new homework policy. The idea is still in development and has to be approved by the middle school principals . Every project or idea has to be approved by teachers and principals, but not all her ideas so appealing for teachers.

“My biggest challenge is getting the school to approve my ideas,  but I am confident about this new homework policy. But my campaign is not just about the academics, I want to make things fun such as one Funday per bimester. I believe this would unite the grade and make school fun,” Navarro said.

The idea of uniting the whole 7th grade by fun and interactive activities is one of the main ideas of her campaign and is one of the reasons people voted for her and supported her during her campaign. Rosario wants to eliminate that gap between social groups in her grade. The idea behind Fundays is to unite and give students the opportunity to make new friends outside their social group.

“I have many ideas to unite 7th grade. The year has just started and I have a lot of time to make a change  as I said in my campaign. I promise to do by best to help every single 7th grader when they have a problem,” Navarro Said
