Unleashing AI: A Double-Edged Sword
Each day Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes more common in our society as it helps solve complex tasks in our daily life. But, there are also worries about how AI will affect our future as its use grows.
While it is true that AI has the potential to improve our lives, there are still many concerns. AI advances improve in a way that is hard for humans to understand. Over the years many great minds have talked about AI as a threat. According to Stephen Hawking “The development of artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” The potential risks of AI are significant and complex, from mass job loss to low-quality education.
“Many are very concerned about the acceleration with which artificial intelligence is beginning to develop, it is even taking jobs, ”Julian Zuñiga, technology teacher, said.
Job Losses
The eventual loss of jobs is one of AI’s biggest threats to our future. There is a chance that many jobs will become automated since AI systems can complete numerous activities faster and more accurately than humans. According to Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, “It’s capable of vastly more than almost anyone knows, and the rate of improvement is exponential.” Specific sectors and businesses, such as manufacturing, retail, and the food service sector, are likely to suffer the greatest employment losses. According to iotforall.com, Automation will displace between 400 and 800 million jobs by 2030, requiring as many as 375 million people to switch job categories entirely. Potentially resulting in significant challenges for a vast number of individuals.
“The more artificial intelligence advances, the more likely it will take more jobs, being more capable than us humans in many aspects” Miguel Tamayo, Grade 11, said.
Low-Quality Education
While AI technology has a significant potential to improve educational results and learning experiences, it also has some negative effects. Overreliance on AI programs is one of the main concerns. Students use AI like Chat GPT and Smodin to complete school work. Essays, complex math, and coding are some of their main uses. Used in the right way AI can be used to complete almost any work given at school and university. A survey by bestcollages.com found that 43% of college students overall say they have had experience using AI tools like Chat GPT, and half of those acknowledge turning to those tools to work on assignments or exams. The number of students using AI to complete work increases and many teachers are not taking action. According to Forbes.com (54%) reported that their instructors had not openly discussed the use of AI tools like Chat GPT and only 25% said their schools or instructors had specified how to use AI ethically or responsibly.
“The misuse of artificial intelligence can lead to students not developing their skills as they should, they will be reduced to just copying and pasting what artificial intelligence gives them,” Zuñiga said.
Data Privacy
AI systems rely on vast amounts of data to function, and this data is often personal and sensitive. Data can come from various sources, including social media platforms, online shopping, and search histories. The amount of data collected can make it challenging to keep track of what information is being used and how it is being used. If this data falls into the wrong hands, it can lead to identity theft and financial fraud.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea for artificial intelligence to have access to personal information. Personal data plus artificial intelligence can cause problems such as manipulation,” Augusto Leonardi, Grade 10, said.
AI positive effects
Even though AIs are mostly looked at in a negative way, there are still many positive aspects of AI that benefit society. AI can benefit jobs worldwide by improving efficiency, enhancing customer experience, facilitating data analysis, promoting better healthcare, increasing safety, advancing research, and improving accessibility. AI can be viewed as a tool that simplifies and accelerates a variety of tasks and jobs. The rise in the use of AI doesn’t necessarily entail a replacement for humans; instead, it can be a tool to enhance human capabilities, leading to increased productivity and innovation when utilized and developed appropriately.
“Artificial intelligence can save a lot of work not only for students but also for teachers, possibly an artificial intelligence can grade work with more personalized standards and in a more fairly and correct way,” Miguel Londoño, Grade 11, said.
