Why are Only Thirty Three Seniors Penalized?

The seniors decided it was a good idea for all them to take a day off and skip class on April 27th,  2018. Soon enough, the school found out through NHS.

National Honor Society in The Columbus School is a very prestigious organization were students are praised for their excellence, therefore the superiors relay so much on them, if something happens it will be pin down to NHS. To ensure that there was a balance the NHS coordinator sent a message informing that every senior that skopped class that day and who is part of the organization had to come for attendance. If they didn’t show up they wouldn’t graduate with the NHS diploma.

“They had never done the attendance thing before until this friday that seniors skipped, but we did believe it was unfair that only the seniors had to go sign but that all the members of NHS had to do it as well. Perhaps we didn’t show up to school that day, but other people didn’t come and weren’t asked to confirm their attendance, blaming it all on us,” said Luisa Urrea, twelth grade student and NHS member.

Only the NHS kids were penalized for the skip day, while  the other seniors received an email from school informing the importance of their assistance. Some members believe it  is unfair since they have to walk on eggshells fearing that anything can prejudice their position.

“I believe this drastic measures were unfair.  after all the time this students have had a record of great academical work and following the pillars of responsibility towards the school,  one mistake should not distort what they have accomplished. Consequences should happen if it is an ongoing problem but as a member I have experienced the threat of NHS  with every little aspect on our academic life, ” said Sofia Barros an eleventh grade student and an NHS member.

Not only twelve grade students agree with the misunderstanding and pressure NHS implies but students in others grades have been affected by it.

“I sent a chat to the NHS group, that said the seniors must be here today since they are not representing the NHS values. It goes against the pillars for a student to miss school, and  it is against what NHS symbolizes and drives students to believe,” said Maria Teresa Mejia the NHS coordinator.

In a way this not only applies to NHS representatives but to all the students, and how it isnt right to drive others into skip day. Many students come to believe that the school cares about  the NHS image, and how it will be tarnished if all of the members agreed on missing school. Therefore the school tries to maintain a balance by making at least thirty three students follow their rules.

“We have been working hard for two semesters, following the rules and participating, and for on day we don’t come we are threatened,” said Urrea, which properly follows what an NHS participant must have as said by Mejia.  “NHS is the National Honor Society being part of it means you are an overall an excellent student, not only academically but character integrity.”

Apparently all the flawless work and dedication put into the program will no be redeemed.

“NHS is helpful in the way that you become a responsible student, but it has its disadvantages since you think to yourself, ‘I can’t do this because of NHS,’ ” said Urrea.
