A Vice Principal In the Making

From long meetings too long days dealing with parents, students, and teachers make up the day of a vice principal. At schools, there are plenty of different positions where people need to deal with different issues with different people. Usually, it comes back to the heads of the departments and those larger departments are dealt with the principals and Vice-principals.

In different positions, people deal with different issues but larger and challenging issues are formed in the different schools, where it starts with a problem between a student and teacher and then develops into something bigger, it has the snowball effect, as it keeps on going it becomes larger and stronger. In a school, everyone thinks that if they have developed an issue the way they will solve it is by going to the Vice Principal.

“ There are a few positions at school that are very hard because there are some that deal more with the adults and there is some that need to handle all through elementary up to high school,” James Bandura, Middle school Vice Principal, said.

VPs vs. Teachers

Being a teacher is one of the cases where they have the chance to manage what they need to deal with every day, they get the chance to decide how they want to deal with their issues in class. In High school teacher decide how they want to take control of their students, in some cases, they decide if a student decides he does not want to work in class teachers decide it is the student’s problem. So the issues they confront in class are made up by them and on how they want to control them, or if they see it is going out of hand they just send them to the vice principal and let them deal with the student.

“I don’t have many issues, kids don’t want to work that would be their choice to fail but if they want to work they can use me as a resource they can use it, but in my class, there are not a lot of dramas,” Brian Summers, 10th grade History and economy teacher, said.

Some just need to make a decision on how they want to handle their problems, but most challenging issues end up exploding in the vice-principals office now that some decide they will not keep on going with the issue that it became.

Vice Principal’s Problem

When those whose problems became large enough that it has to involucrate family members they just decide to take that issue the vice principal. Those issues that come up are never the same, this ends up affecting the vice-principals day now that he has goals that he sets up weekly and is usually affected by the constant development of problems, now that he is in a continual change of tasks and can’t focus on one specific assignment.

“The most difficult thing is the starting and stopping of different tasks because of constant interruptions every moment, but at the same time it is kind of exciting now that every day it is going to be something new, something different,” Bandura, said.

Being vice principal offers a different variety of controversy with students and teachers, well problems that come up are never the same, which is challenging now that the solution is ever the same, regularly changes. The broad variety of problems often involucrate different persons now that it constantly includes students, teachers, and family members, so it makes the VP to listen to every different point of view.

“I am learning new things every day now that one-minute I am dealing with students, then I am dealing with parents and then with teachers, the true challenge is trying to balance and shift the different hats (referring to problems) at any moment of the day has been tough but fun at the same time”

Other Tasks

Vice principal is not all challenges and dealing with problems well they get to make changes at schools, well their job is to handle the staff members and the students. They need to know everything that is happening and need to make sure their students are always emotionally stable and have no issues at school.

Not only making sure there are no issues being developed at school but being able to adapt the day depending on the setback the day might have, vice principals need to handle with more than the problems they need to form a curriculum, and they change things that will suit them. Changes are implemented every year to improve student development and student academic level.

“We implemented a constant advisory time for the students, where we do social-emotional work, and character counts ethics, where activities are done with students where 6th 7th and 8th graders get to work together for a common goal, X-block implemented, and in discipline we try to base it on how can the student make up the mistake they made,” Bandura, said.
