Students from The Columbus School dive into complex wardrobe planning, balancing tropical vibes with personal styles, supporting local brands, and crafting unforgettable looks for their November Cartagena getaway.
As excitement for the Cartagena trip builds, students like Juana Upegui and Amalia Hinestrosa share their preparation stories, revealing how the city’s vibrant culture and climate influenced their fashion choices. These students prioritized breathable fabrics, Colombian brands, and outfits tailored for specific trip occasions, showcasing a mix of creativity and practicality.
Cartagena’s tropical atmosphere motivated students to select outfits that demonstrated the city’s vibrant and relaxed energy. Light fabrics, fresh colors, and unique designs became necessary in their wardrobes, showing personal style with the destination’s aesthetic. Many also prioritized supporting Colombian artisans to celebrate local culture through their fashion choices.
“I was inspired by the tropical vibe, light, fresh, and colorful outfits that match the warm weather and relaxed atmosphere,” Juana Upegui, senior, said.
Millimetric planning was key as students organized their wardrobes for Cartagena, focusing on versatility and style. With activities ranging from beach outings to formal nights, they were completely strict, carefully choosing and coordinating each outfit. This preparation helped them feel confident and stress-free while packing efficiently.
“I made a list and took pictures of my outfits to stay organized,” Amalia Hinestrosa, 11th grader, said.
Shopping for the trip also highlighted students’ desire to balance sustainability and uniqueness. Many explored smaller Colombian brands and handmade items, allowing them to showcase local talent while embracing eco-friendly options. This thoughtful approach gave their wardrobes a personal and meaningful touch.
“I looked at Instagram shops and local Colombian brands that support artists and workers. It felt good to represent Colombia,” Hinestrosa said.
Practicality was just as important as fashion, with students choosing breathable fabrics and comfortable fits to endure the tropical heat. They ensured their outfits not only looked stylish but also allowed freedom of movement for activities like dancing.
“I focus on feeling comfortable while showing off fashionable clothing. It’s important for everything to fit well and be easy to wear,” Upegui explained.
Group outings and special events added an extra layer of excitement to wardrobe planning. Students coordinated specific looks for activities like beach days at Cholón or elegant nights in Bahía, ensuring they matched the occasion’s tone while still expressing their individuality.
“For Bahía night, it was all about elegant attire, long dresses of any color that looked polished and perfect for photos,” Hinestrosa recalls.
