Grey’s Anatomy: The Show That Won’t Die

More than any other series on TV today, Grey’s Anatomy is a show that, if mentioned, forces a conversation, as after many years it’s still on-trend. People might ask “Is Grey’s still on?” Well, it is, and in the 19th season, its end is still unknown.

Grey’s Anatomy, the ABC show that premiered in 2005, is better than the credit it recieves. The medical drama about Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital doctors, where Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, grows through her medical career and love life starting as an intern and becoming the chief of surgery.

As a long-running show, people expect a decrease in its quality and relevance, but this comes far from the truth. Grey’s Anatomy has seen an increase in ratings, as the fall-finally in season 19 has drawn one of the highest numbers of audiences for this season. According to the Hollywood reporter the fall finally had around 8.7 million viewers, that’s more than double the 3.72 million who watched the season’s premiere.

“I believe that the show never dies and the viewers each season keep on fantasizing over the show because fans always want to know what’s next, what plot twist is coming, or what is going to happen next. That’s exactly how I feel I keep on watching the show because I need to know what’s going to happen and even if I’m tired, I feel that I can’t stop watching because I need to know how the show is going to end,” Mara Montoya, Grade 11, said.

Grey’s Anatomy viewers’ increased through crossover episodes with Station 19, one of its parallel series on firefighters. Station 19 characters work hand in hand with the Seattle Grey’s hospital. Crossovers happen on some Thursday nights when the episodes are aired. Station 19 will air just before Grey’s and both episodes will be completely connected showing what is happening in Seattle and what has happened to the patients that later arrive at Seattle Grey’s hospital.

Grey’s is known for the interest that it gets from its audience and how common it is for a fan’s career choices to change as many get encouraged to study medicine; a very complicated career that not everyone is cut out for. Although not everyone will want to start a 19-season show, once someone starts watching they can’t stop. Many people reported not wanting to start the show at some point and have now completed watching the series for the third time.

Some of the show’s main strengths and audience captivators are the aftermaths of these catastrophes, and plot twists that come with different coping mechanisms for the emotional traumas that happen, creating the emotional core of the show. This is reflected in the way the characters dealt with many different occurrences throughout the show.

For example, the plane crash in Season 8 was addressed through humor, all of the emotional and physical trauma created a more compassionate and heart-tendering feeling in the show. Also in Season 12, the show deals with one of the biggest curveballs possible as Derek dies.

Meredith, as portrayed in the first few seasons, has not existed for years. Instead, she has become a powerful and exceptional doctor who is willing to explore a romance that best suits her life and work. Grey has had her ups and downs throughout the series and many people believe that the show won’t be able to continue without her as she is leaving after completing season 19.

On November 17, Ellen announced her departure from the show, it is still not confirmed if the show will continue without her or come to an end as well. Fans feel skeptical about its future without the main character, as Meredith has been in the spotlight for years and the sudden change might mean the end of the show. But this is still unknown as Grey’s Anatomy tends to modify its formulas and formats to introduce and accommodate new themes and relationships, creating more vivid storytelling.

Even though, Grey’s is known for having countless characters die, generating many critiques. Some say that the show is losing viewers because of these, for example when the character Derek Shepherd died many fans reported this made them stop wanting to watch the show, they believe that the deaths of the characters are making the show lose its magic.

On the other hand, many fans believed that it is an important part of the show that adds drama, interest, and cliffhangers to the series. The deaths create drastic changes and make the audience feel more emotionally attached. Grey’s is self-aware of how dramatic it can get, but they also give a funny take on some of these terrible occurrences.

“Even though throughout the show many main characters die, new characters come in to make a positive change to the show, this makes the series get out of a repetitive cycle as these new characters have different things to add. I believe that these new characters create a beneficial change to the show and make it more fun to watch,” Pascual Cardozo Grade 11, said.

In conclusion, is this show worth watching? It is. We can see why Grey’s Anatomy is constantly a conversation starter, there will always be something new to talk about as it never stops changing, it’s always on trend. Grey’s is a versatile show that everyone should watch, it’s a series that will catch the audience’s attention quickly, and have them hooked through all seasons, something that not many can do.
