New Firewall to Restrict Devices, Free Up Bandwith

Technology department will update the Columbus School’s firewall in a few months, allowing faster Wifi, but restricting the number of devices used at the same time.

An update in the Columbus School’s Fortinet  firewall will restrict students to the use of only one device at a time and only two devices at a time for staff and teachers. This is meant to resolve school’s connectivity problems and let classes progress more fluidly. Currently the new system is being tested.

“It’s a new change made in the firewall that is being implemented to increase wifi connectivity. It’s a change that’s been done this year but it is just in test trials in order to implement it later on,” Nancy Velez, Technology Service Coordinator, said.

The Fortinet firewall change will affect every person who navigates in school’s servers. Even though it has its restrictions, it will enhance Wifi which has been a great problem for students and teachers over the years.

“All users will be forced to navigate on devices, so that the student only has one device to navigate, and staff users will have only two devices to navigated with addition to other changes in the Wifi,”  Velez said.

11th grade student Andres Uribe found this change controversial, but beneficial for everybody, and believes it was something the school needed to do a long time ago.

“I think Wifi upgrade will be awesome for the school, it will make us work faster, so it’s really beneficial,” Uribe said.

This change to resolve connectivity issues at school is one of the many changes the school is implementing to make Wifi better and faster.

“Everything is positive because the idea with this is to have a better implementation in the whole school’s connection, and to modify servers connectivity response time with users,” Velez, said.

The update seemed a controversial change, but turned out to be beneficial for everybody at school. It’s projected to stop connectivity issues and make clases run all activities without problems.

“I would rather have faster Wifi, better than using two devices at a time, because in my opinion the school’s Wifi is pretty bad,” Uribe, said.
