La Guajira Trip Postponed Due to Venezuela Conflict

La Guajira trip was postponed because of concerns about the security of the 8th Grade students due to violence across the border in Venezuela.

Students were supposed to fly to Riohacha, Guajira on March 5, however, their trip was postponed because of la Guajira proximity with troubled Venezuela. Their main goal at la Guajira was to get drinkable water for 1000 students in Institución Educativa Cabo de la Vela.

“We are very sad we couldn’t go it was a great experience helping those kids, we were able to raise about 45 million pesos through sales and many activities to donate so they could have drinkable water,” Pedro Molina, 8th Grader, said.

Students raised 54 million pesos for the Institución Educativa Cabo de la Vela drinkable water, however, this donation will be happening but not from the students. The students won’t give the donations themselves, but this help will be sent through a transportation company.

“The donations will be going to la Guajira, It’s sad the students won’t experience the feeling of helping a community, of giving but through a transportation company this student in La Guajira will get the 54 million pesos destined for necessary backpacks they need and drinkable water,” Luz Myriam Arango, 8th Grade Teacher, said.

The 54 million pesos raised for donations will be spent in hygienic supplies, backpacks, but most important for meals and drinkable water for 1000 students in Institución Educativa Cabo de la Vela. This supplies will be sent through a transportation company who volunteered to deliver for free.

“Thankfully we had a transportation company who volunteered to take this supplies for free, we are not going to be there but everything will be received by the students in la Guajira,” Luz Myriam Arango, 8th Grade Teacher, said.

Students feel there should be some sort of compensation since they worked really hard to raise the charity money and having the grade requirements for being able to attend. Some insist on new destination since 8th grade is the only grade where the school plans a trip and it would be a shame to lose this opportunity.

I feel very sad because before the trip we were told that if we were failing one or more subjects weren’t able to go on the trip so everybody was working very hard. The school took a good decision because security is very important, but there should be some kind of compensation like a trip to somewhere else,” Pedro Molina, 8th-grader, said.
