Character Counts Week is Here!

Character counts week, gives high school students and teachers the opportunity to look at all these values and how they are really seen in their daily lives.

By doing this variety of activities at the beginning of their first block, many teachers and students are in an argument if this is really going to change the way they see their daily lives.

“I like working on values, but not like this, I feel like these should be better organized, more thought, and more developed”, 10th grade Social Science Karol Marin said.

10th grade Geometry teacher, Gabriella Passentino, also disagrees with the way the school is trying to encourage the students, she proposes that they should be more dyanamic rather than just looking at them and that’s it.

“I think we could use more dynamic charcter counts activities and have more teacher training on the actual activities we are going to do, so the teachers feel more prepared,” Passentingo said.

Instead Andres Rendon, High School Counselor thinks that if what the teachers are saying is true then unfortunetly this will be sent to the students as well, by this they will change their lives.

“I think that all the efforts we do with regards to shaping better citizens, better students, better people for life, it will always be valuable, it worries me that there are some people that think that this activities don’t make sense and I would like to make a meeting to discuss this,” Rendon said.

Vicky Jaramillo High School Vice Principal, is also worried because she knows that if the teachers really think this, then that will make the students less cautios of what is happening.

I find it very sad and very serious because the essence of the formation of the students is in the values because the values are taught by example and it is necessary also to believe in them to be able to educate the students,” Jaramillo said.

An example of a quote that gathers all character counts seen in The Columbus School is the one right outside of the cafeteria it says “Be kind say hello, be respectful, say please and thank you, give your best smile, be Columbus, live your values”
