Dancing Through Life

In 2015, TCS junior Amalia Triana suffered a foot injury that required a difficult surgery forcing her to choose between soccer and dance. The moment she chose dance, her perspective on life changed and she decided to fully dedicate herself into her passion and future aspirations, once she was healed.

Since then, Amalia set as her goal to be a professional dancer and each day of the week she trains and gives the best of her to accomplish her objective.

“The nine months I had to wait were crucial for my dance, It made me realize I wanted to dedicate to this art for the rest of my existence,” Triana said.

How it all began

Amalia´s  development began as a little childs hobby, but as time passed and Amalia grew, she committed  to her devotion. She was introduced into different genres such as Street Dance, Dancehall and Contemporary and then into the competitive world.

“My mother entered me into ballet dancing classes where I realized that I wanted to explore more the world of a dancer, so I decided to enter Be Academy. Each time my body demanded more so I began exploring and found my current dance studio; The Rhoom where I received a whole new perspective about dancing,” Triana said.

When Amalia was five years old, her dance headway began. Even though she had a limited experience, she fell in love with it and discovered what her true passion was.

“A long time ago I saw Amalia’s potential. I knew she was right where she was supposed to be and that she had a incredible future ahead,” Juanita Quintana, Triana’s mom, said.

“I had no doubt Amalia was going to achieve great things as a dancer. Since I got to know her I could see the love she put into every movement and all the potential she had to succeed in this ambitious field,”  Mariana Tobon, Amalia’s first mentor, said.

Amalia looks at dance as an art and a way to express and liberate herself by movements, and that’s her biggest motivation to be a future dancer.

“Dancing makes me understand myself and explore my body in different aspects, it leads me into a lot of new perspectives and sensations that I have never found in other things,”  Triana said.

During a soccer game two years ago Amalia´s Tibia and fibula were fractured. She went through a very difficult reconstruction surgery not to mention her critical and challenging recovery were she was forced to make a decision.

“Even though I love soccer I knew that dancing was my one and only priority so when I couldn’t dance, it was very difficult for me to accept the situation. It  was a reflection and a eye opening for me to realize that dancing was and is everything,” Triana said.

The moment Amalia passed through this confrontation with herself, she knew there was much more out for her and that her heart was where she could dance and express herself.

“I began competing about an year ago when I became part of a dancing company named Blue Blood Dance. I practice mainly for competitions but also for shows and other things I am asked to do,” Triana said.

Day by day

Amalia is a girl with a clear objective and all her day turns around her dancing lessons and rehearsals. Even though she has a very demanding schedule, she accomplishes all her personal, academic and dance duties with success.

“I dance every day of the week, from Monday to Sunday. From Monday to Friday I dance about five to six hours a day and on the weekends three to four hours each day,” Triana said.

It hasn’t been easy for her to change her life from a passionate dancer into a competitive and high level artist. During this transition she transformed her life to prioritize her career.

“I manage my personal business and school in a very organized way, I had to learn to work in every free space I have, even five minutes between classes are crucial,” Triana said.

Amalia has faced the fact her relationship with both her family and friends passed to a new place where she has been forced to sacrifice part of her personal life to support her commitment and growth in dance.

“Im very happy and proud to see my daughter do what makes her happy but it’s difficult now that It’s hard to find some time for us to be together,” Quintana said.

Amalia’s family and teachers all agree that she is a consistent and committed dancer who is focused on her goals, no matter what.

“Amalia is an essential part of our crew. She is a girl with a huge capability and dedication that is willing to give everything to progress,” Alejandro Ramirez, Director of Blue Blood Dance, said.

Future

Amalia has no doubt dance will be part of  the rest of her life and that she will work and persist to become the dancer she wants to evolve into.

“It’s something I want to do when I grow up and I want to study this career that it’s basically the history of dance. Then I want to be a choreographer or dance with famous people,” Triana said.

Triana has received all the encouragement to follow her passion and all this love is fundamental to make all this journey possible and what’s left to come.

“I support and love her plans and whatever she wants to be I will be there and if she wants me to accompany her I will be there,” Quintana said.

There’s not hesitation that Amalia has the competence to get where she wants to and that she has the indispensable basis to go as far as she propose herself.

“Amalia has a combination between talent, disciple, hard work and development, both physical and mental, and that is her biggest key to success,” Ramirez said.

Amalia is a clear example of a person who does not desist and that will always insist to pursue her happiness and explode the talent she has to keep succeeding as a tremendous dancer.

“I never thought I would fully recover and get as far as I’ve got, I can not ignore the fact that this injury marked my life and made me the dancer I am and projected the dancer I want to be,” Triana said.
