Grandparents Day From Far Away.

Grandparents day is a day for grades k4 to first grade to celebrate grandparents. Most grandparents are able to come but some have passed away or live far.

Students that don’t have grandparents or they have trouble getting to school because of their work or where they live, can feel excluded and saddened by this celebration, seeing all of the preparation and work that goes into it. Kids prepare songs, cards and gifts, made by them in order to make this day special and it can feel discouraging to be making presents knowing there’s no chance you are getting to enjoy the day with your grandparents.

“Every kid, even if they don’t don’t have grandparents, make the gifts because it is an activity for everyone.” Said K5E assistant teacher, Catalina Jaramillo.

Children that don’t have grandparents have different options on what to do on the said day.

“There are various options. First, another person from their family or close to the kid can come and act as a grandparent figure. Second, another family can “adopt” them for the day and spend the day together. Third, they have the option to opt out of coming to school if they don’t accommodate to any of the previously mentioned options.” Maria Claudia Marin, K5C teacher.

Every kid is encouraged to participate in all of the activities, from crafting the presents, to presenting the songs and the presents, regardless of the fact that they might or might not have grandparents present on this day. Everyone is welcome, from parents to grandparents, to kids.

”Everyone participates, at the end of the day it’s the family who decides if they come or not,” Jaramillo stated.

Not only kids but also parents may feel left out if their kid is not participating because it is a milestone and a dream for every parent to get to enjoy their kids alongside their parents.

“ We were present on grandparents day even though my kid doesn’t have grandparents from either side of the family. She was accompanied by their godparents and she got to live the experience with them and live the experience through her classmates’ experience as well” Carmen Garcia mother at the school

This is an experience that doesn’t exclude anyone, it is an experience that even if you do or don’t have grandparents it is full of learning experiences. and this is all coming from the girl that didn’t have grandparents on grandparents day.
