Character Counts Week Arrives to Elementary School

To help students develop good values, Character Counts Week will take place the 3rd week of October in the TCS Elementary School.

K4 to 5th grade students will attend and participate in special activities created by counselors, by having a type of value spirit week. According to 4th grade student, Salome Isaza, this is an important event for their life’s formation.

“It’s a week that every day has a value, like responsibility, respect, so everyday you do an activity based on that value,” Salome Isaza, said.

According to Duyen Davis, 2nd to 3rd grader counselor, the school implemented this program when they created the 2020 mission.

“The Columbus School started implementing the Character Count program like 4 years ago, when we started the initiative of values and character, when the whole 2020 mission was created.” Davis said.

To implement this program, counselors went to Bogota to train, and had all necessary requirements to bring this program to school.

“The counselors went to Bogota and got trained in it then we brought it here,” Davis said.

According to Patricia Henao K4 counselor, the kids are taught since the beginning the meaning of the Character Counts values, and that they do participate in Character Counts Week.

“A value is applied in every class, and the objective is to make the kids do an action based on a value, at the end of the class each kid is recognized for their action. Students from K4, also participate in the Character Counts Week, not only 2nd to 3rd grade, but the entire Elementary School participates,” Henao said.

Lastly the main goal or importance of this event is to teach students the importance of the universal values.

“It’s a reminder of the values and to live the values and to look for examples of the values in every day and in every place or interaction and because everybody else in the world is doing it, so we are part of that celebration,” Davis said.
