COSMUN 2018

The Columbus School Model United Nations (COSMUN) engages students from schools all over Colombia in discussions about controversial world topics that motivate them to take action and rationalize their ideas.

Currently in action, COSMUN is placed at the Middle School Facilities here at TCS. Students can display their critical thinking and abilities to be a leader.

“By joining the UN Model, you are exploiting your leadership,” Maria Jose Velez, Cosmun 2018 Delegate, said.

As every political system that has ever existed, there are certain ranks and certain roles that correspond to every students that participate in these simulations. Some can be press, logistic, some delegates and the most smartly equipped take the role of a president or his right hand, the vice president.

“I am the vice president of Specpol, to become one you need to have delegated at other UN models, then sign up to take an exam, after getting more than the sixty five percent of the questions right, you pass through a trial of interviews, and then the fittests get chosen,” Tomás Mejia, Specpol Vice President, said.

Everyone has their own way of dressing, but certainly, these aspired politicians have to dress accordingly to correspond their strong attitudes and well prepared speeches which are not only to impress but also to create a change.

“Both genders can’t wear jeans, women can not wear short skirts, shoes that show the toes, and can’t use shirts which show the shoulders. In the other hand, men have to wear a blazer and can only take it off with the president or vice president’s consent,” Velez said.

Obviously to remind people how they are supposed to behave, there are a set of rules which are imposed to the delegates and enforced by the presidents and vice presidents of each commission. If there is a disregard of those rules, then a sanction will be proposed on the delegate.

“If the delegates says something that is wrong or something that is disrespectful, if the delegate disregards the dress code, if he/she is out of order, that is how to get a sanction,” Velez said.

The Columbus School has a great reputation when it comes to the UN models, these are events which are taken very seriously by the teachers, students, and school staff members.

“COSMUN has a reputation for being very organized, serious, and dynamic, it is a role model for other schools,” Valentina Lopez, Vesmun Head of Press, said.
