Sports Awards Night Extravaganza
TCS Sport Award Night was held May 24th, 2018, over 200 people gathered together to honor student athletes and celebrate a memorable school year.
Awards were held in the Susan Walley Theatre from 6pm to 8pm. Students were required to dress nicely, no jeans or tennis shoes. Each coach addressed parents and athletes and highlighted the team’s major accomplishments of the year. There were also dance and theatre presentations from TCS students. 20 awards were handed out throughout the night, with the list of winners below.
“The Sports Awards Night was created to highlight the high school athlete’s accomplishments throughout the 2017-2018 school year. The idea is that it becomes a tradition, integrating theater, music, dance and sports,” said sports coordinator Freddie Badillo.
Through the night a series of awards were given out to students. Those awards were MVP, MIP and Coaches award, some additional awards were given including highest team GPA and an special recognition for athletes who play two sports.
“I think that it was really good that there was a recognition of all those awards and it was really good that the coaches had the opportunities to honor their players for their accomplishments,” said boys basketball coaches award winner and two sport athlete Tomás Moreno.
Athletes who attended the ceremony were thankful for an opportunity to be recognized, since not many events praise student athletes publicly.
“It was a space that recognized athletes and the huge effort they made to get to that point and I think it’s great because there aren’t many things that recognizes athletes in the school,” said girls basketball MVP, Maria Jose Puerta.
To implement a new way to commemorate student athletes in a school environment, these awards came to mind to sports coordinator after he had done them in different schools. TCS sports coordinator, Freddie Badillo, spoke about the outcome of the event at the school,
“I was very satisfied with the outcome, and especially pleased with the commitment of the junior class representative who helped out with the organization of the event,” said Badillo.
Awards were a success, many students liked the opportunity that the school provided to honor athletes. Since it was a success this year it’s now being institutionalized into happening every year from now on.
“I would like the school continue doing it for years to come, the awards last night seemed like a very good idea,” said Puerta.
