First grade students in TCS are learning and reflecting using a very particular method, Art.

Teachers in first grade have started to find different ways to teach the students they have. Multiple teaching methods have been discovered and applied over time, but in this very particular case, art is being used as a tool to teach students various things in a more creative and interesting way.

Not only teachers are interested in this method, but students themselves enjoy this particular way of learning.

“I like a lot art, and I like a lot drawing and painting, and I enjoy doing it” said Amelia Jaramillo 1A student, who also claimed that she “had lots of fun on thanksgiving when we were given an art activity.”

However art does not just focus on being an entertaining activity done just for fun. Studies have shown that art helps develop multiple skills hard to obtains from other classes.

According to the Washington Post, studies have shown that describes the top 10 skills children learn from art: “creativity, confidence, problem solving, perseverance, focus, non verbal communication, receiving feedback, collaboration, dedication, and accountability.”

Camilo Turiza also a TCS first grader said that during Thanksgiving they celebrated by “making drawings of turkeys and coloring their feathers,” Yet that activity was not only to give thanks, but it also allowed the children to practice and further develop the skills previously mentioned.

Students at TCS might find interesting practicing art just because they think it’s fun and easy to do, given that there is no grade standard for art if it can be justified properly. However for teachers it’s a crucial skill they must practice and develop.

TCS art teacher Sofia Arcila stated that “through art students can learn to express themselves, discover strategies to let their imagination fly, they can learn that they can do things by themselves”, but she also commented that art “is a great complement to other subjects, english with illustration, math with proportion and geometry, algon with other classes students see.”
