TCS Faces Internet Crisis

One of the biggest technology problems that the school has faced, took place Monday, May 7, when during the entire morning there was no access to the internet.

The past May 7th, the school had a major difficulty where there was no WiFi connection for the entire morning until around 12:00 pm. This problem was not caused by the school, instead the blame falls to the company that provides the WiFi connection, EPM. This was because of a failure in their central station which is sited in the Comuna 13.

“Past Monday a big problem presented itself when the internet connection was down the entire morning. Although we were not ready for this we did the best that we could, and thanks to the team, no major problems were presented,” said Juan Pablo Vallejo, member of the TCS technology team

Wifi connection has become a daily necessity all around the world and many people are dependent on it. This is true at TCS, not only for teachers but also for students, in order to be able to work and not fall behind in classwork.

“We were left without internet service, it was something with the provider. We did what we could in order to solve it at a school level, but because of the magnitude of the failure we had to wait until the provider fixed the problem,” said Vallejo.

Students normally think that when there is no WiFi or there’s a problem related to the it, that the school is to blame. Many of them don’t know that sometimes the school has nothing to do with the problem. For example this last incident was a problem directly caused by the provider.

“The channel comes from a power plant that they have on Juan 23, a sector in the Comuna 13. There was a power failure, the machine can hold up to two hours with batteries, but because of the police not allowing the EPM technicians to fix the machine they ran out of power,” said Vallejo.

Due to the location of the central system, and some other security problems presented on this site, technicians were not able to repair it at once. Because of this the company failed to provide the school with WiFi. Proving that in this instance, the problem with the WiFi was out of the school’s hands.

Although the school was left with no internet during the morning, EPM sent a technician to respond with the problem. Thanks to this, the issue was resolved and no other problems arised.

“It was a very strange morning where there was no internet connection, where we couldn’t basically study. But we can’t blame the school because they had nothing to do with it,” said Tomas Moreno, TCS student.
