First Class Goalkeeper, why is he on the Bench?

Real Madrid is going through a crisis during this season and many point fingers at the poor decisions by its coach, Santiago Solari, as for example starting the wrong players during the wrongs games. But, one of the most controversial decisions he has made is remains to be his choosing of Courtois over Keylor Navas.

For me it is a clear decision another goalkeeper was not needed. Keylor navas had showed his value during the four seasons he had played at Madrid, and there was no reason to look for someone to back him up, much less a replacement. The Costa Rican is an exceptional goalie and should be the Madrid’s first option  without a doubt but, it seems like the Solari and President of the club, Florentino Perez, have other plans in mind. But does Courtois really stand to the Real Madrid level?

Keylor Navas has been the Real Madrid’s goalkeeper for four years, playing most of the games on these seasons. He gave confidence to the fans, confidence since his first game at the club, showcasing his abilities in front of the goal. On the other hand, this season is the first for Courtois as the starting goalkeeper and for Keylor as a bench player, and throughout the year, Courtois has been a focus point of why the team is having so much trouble thanks to the amount of goal he has let their opponents net in. For many people, including me, it is very hard to see such a great goalkeeper, like Navas is, and see him sitting on the bench biting his nails, and without the ability to helping the team win important matches. Personally I think there is a clear difference between Navas and Courtois, quality. I still wonder the reason Solari has allowed Courtois to start this whole season even though he has been nothing but insecure in front of the three posts.

After his third consecutive win of the most prestigious club tournament in the continent, The Champions League, the European Committee of the UEFA determined Keylor Navas as the best goalkeeper in the whole competition, recognizing his hard work and quintessential help he gave his team to reach and win the final. He’s the only goalkeeper that can say he has won third consecutive Champions League in the entire history of soccer. No goalie has ever been close. He will probably remain for many years to be the only netkeeper to do so.It is quite simple, to do what Navas did, and to win the recognition he did, your place in the starting line-up should hold no place for doubts. Not even Gianluigi Buffon, one of or maybe the best goalkeeper of all time, has ever won one single Champions League. Navas showed his abilities in the statistics of the 2015-2016 season, where he only got scored 3 times of the 11 games he played in the prestigious tournament, having an average of 0.27 goals scored on him per game, both in the pitch and in the number he is unbeatable.

Iker Casillas has been and forever will be one of the best goalkeepers to have ever played at Real Madrid. He played for them for a total of sixteen seasons! In those sixteen seasons he won a total of nineteen trophies, including three Champions league. To see a goalkeeper, in only four seasons, reach eleven trophies, it is truly astonishing but even better, three of those eleven trophies were Champions Leagues. There is no doubt Keylor is an exceptional goalkeeper. After all, he was the one who took the starting position from Casillas. It is no easy task to fulfill the gloves of Iker after he had left Madrid, but he truly showed his value.

It is clear in numbers, history, and in direct comparisons that Real Madrid should really make use of the amazing goalkeeper they posses. It’s time to correct past errors before it is too late. I’m not the only Madrid fans that change is ought to happen, but I think it has a clear start, and it’s in the net.
