Emilio Arango on “Veganism: The Key to a Sustainable Society”

In the article “Veganism: The Key to a Sustainable Society” by Isabelle Vergnaud, she writes about the plausible environmental as well as physical benefits of adopting a vegan diet.  While I agree that there is an issue regarding livestock at an environmental level, I heavily disagree with the absolutist nature of Vergnaud’s stance. Independent of my opinion, I garnered insight as to what were the pros and cons of developing a less animal-based diet. This included the reduced risk of developing heart disease, certain types of cancer, and weight loss. Environmentally, there is a strong emphasis on the impact such a diet would cause in the reduction of water and energy consumption. My perspective was reassured throughout the article and came to the conclusion that the economic, physical, and sociocultural benefits from having a mixed diet are much more sustainable than that of shunning either side of the food spectrum. Regardless of not having an argument I found particularly strong, I feel like there was an important sense of conviction behind every point, and I admire Vergnaud’s commitment to her ideals. It’s remarkable to see her originality of thought, such as when she was granting context to the usual response people have when knowing she is vegan. I wish there was more of a space for the reader to include their opinion and feel like if there was more ample room for discussion the article would’ve had a greater impact on me as a reader. Regardless, there is a clear and passionate point made: “This lifestyle has been advertised as the single best way to fight climate change.”
