TCS Teachers Cycle to the Top

Several Columbus School teachers have begun cycling to school regularly from El Pobaldo since it has recently become a trend in the city.

This group of teachers are riding their bikes up Las Palmas to school for reasons including the adventure, exercise, the aesthetic experience and transportation.

“I think it’s about the adventure, and then you’re staying in shape and so it’s like two things in one,” Jeremy Gleason, 8th grade History Teacher, said.

A group of 4-5 teachers are biking up about once a week, but Gleason bikes up everyday.

“We’re starting a collection of people like Ms. Butterworth, Trent, myself and Mr. Ambron, he bikes aswell,” Gleason said.

Gleason started doing it because of his dislike on the school transportation, but as he kept on cycling, it ended up being an essential part of his day to day life.

“I started  because I didn’t like taking the bus and it’s a pretty unique  route, like the hill up to the school and you get a beautiful view when the sun is rising and it’s a nice way to start the day,” Gleason said.

That aesthetic experience is what really gets them going. Everything about the ride up makes them enjoy what they are doing and not feel restricted about following a monotonous schedule.

“You are just not restricted to the bus and also on the moto everything goes by so fast so you are not really able to kind of take in all your senses,” Gleason said.

Teachers riding to school began a few years ago when Jay Goodman, a 12th grade English Teacher started biking to school on a daily basis. Other teachers found him intimidating, but this “gang” began two years ago when Jeremy Gleason started working at the school.

“He is going to deny it but he was the inspiration for all of this,”  Emily Butterworth, 11th grade English Teacher, said.

According to teachers, it is important to connect with what there is around us and as people that are not from the city, to make it feel like home.

“It’s just a really cool way to be connected to the city, you know, because you see everything, you smell everything, you hear everything than if obviously you’re walking it’s going to take a long time and if  you’re in a moto you have a helmet, you know, and the gas and the smell of the moto isn’t very pleasant,” Gleason said.
