TCS Students Win Recognitions at BAMUN

November 21, 2016

Columbus School students won recognition awards at the closing ceremony of  Barranquilla’s Marymount School Model United Nations (BAMUN) on November 7th.

Presidents of each commission observed all the delegates during the model. Later, the presidents and Secretary General decided which delegates were most outstanding. Awards are based on the delegate’s  problem solving abilities, debating accuracy, and ability to defend their country.

“I was anxious not only for what I could win but, as we say in Spanish I was haciendo fuerza, supporting  the other people that came with me to Barranquilla. Still I do have to admit as my committee’s names were called my heart rate did rise,” Juan Felipe Gaviria, 9th grader, winner of the Most Impressive Delegate in ILO, said.

Students often find the award ceremony a highlight of the model. It recognizes their progress and their position in relation to other delegates in their commissions.bamun_menu

“This award for me means the love I feel for MUN and will
act as an inspiration for me to continue participating actively in this sort of events,” Gaviria said.

In addition to  academic awards, delegates voted for the winners of  press awards which were based on social traits.

“I was extremely excited when I got nominated because I really thought about my style choices for the UN model. But I truly thought someone else would get it and probably someone from Marymount, so when I won, I felt happy that people liked what I wore as much as I did,” Maria Paula Jimenez, 11th grade winner of  “The Carolina Herrera Award” the Best Dressed Award, said.

While many students felt nervous about the awards, there were others who focused on the performance of their colleagues.

“During the closing ceremony I was anxious, but not for me, I no longer feel the same excitement I felt in 9th grade. I felt anxious for those  that are in 9th and 10th grade since they’re just starting in the MUN,” David Franco, 12th grader winner of Best Delegate for Legal Council and the Fidel Castro Award, said.

According to The Model UN preparations, best delegates are the ones that research their country and others in a very detailed way, the more they know about their country the easier it is for them to defend it with concrete arguments. Also experience is a key factor for creating a distinguished delegate, the more models they attend the more knowledge gained.

“The eloquence of arguments, the considerable difference that divides a good and bad delegates is being eloquent.  Not only having the character, but also the calmness to express one’s argument without disobeying the protocols, being smart about timing and eloquence,” Franco said.
