Lunchtime Action in the Library

The Columbus High School students take advantage of the library and its resources to do their homework as well as other school assignments during their free time.

Lunch is a busy time for the library because  students go there to finish  homework and other school related projects. They can count on Librarians Connie Gonzalez and Lina Isaza, as well as computers and books to help them finish their work.

“I like going to the library because it provides numerous resources for my science project. Sometimes, I prefer going to the library during lunch rather than doing my project at home because I can find more help there,” 7th grader Alicia Espinal said.

Espinal often visits the library during her lunch breaks to finish homework. This is the case with many other students from both middle and high school.

“When I don’t do homework at home or when I have to finish something I find it useful to go to the library because I can find computers, ipads, and books,” Espinal said.

For Connie Gonzalez, it’s not easy  to manage the library during window and lunch because  many students need help there is not a lot of time. Gonzalez and Isaza take turns helping students print, checkout and return books, and help with research.

“We take turns during lunch because both of us need to have lunch, its not our choice to take turns but its what we have to do. We have to eat lunch in the mid-day because in the morning the cafeteria doesn’t have lunch and after 2 p.m there is no more lunch,” Gonzalez said.

They help the students that arrive first and go in order to help everyone, they have to prioritize  students that get there first.

“We always have to help the students that want to print and to check in or out  library books,” Connie Gonzalez said.

Both Gonzalez and Isaza also need to have their lunch, so taking turns works out for them.

“We have one hour to eat our lunch, sometimes less depending on the amount of work we have. For me, its enough time to eat my lunch,” Gonzalez affirms.

Students not only go to the library to study but also to have fun. Some of them like to stay in and read or hang out during breaks, and Gonzalez has no problem with that.

“We like coming to the library during lunch and window to catch Pokemons because here we can find a lot,”  Simon Molina, a 6th grade student, said.

It is not an easy job to keep the library organized during lunch. It is a crowded time, but Connie Gonzalez and Lina Isaza have shown that it is possible.

“For me, lunch is the best time of the day in the library. I love when the library is crowded because I know that there is collaborative work but with respect,” Gonzalez said.
