TCS Moving Forward, New Robotics Team

The Columbus School has a Robotics Club called Lighting Blue Lizards, this year they’ll be competing in Miami Robotics Regionals.

The Lighting Blue Lizards are working on the pre-season and hopefully will go to the Regionals, this year the school has its own team, they are composed by 3 departments which are Programmers, Mechanics, and Marketing.

“Last year there was no robotics team in school, nobody knew about it, this year is taking place right here, we are staying after school every tuesday and saturday,” Gabriel Vallejo, TCS 11th grade student, said.

Last year a robotics team was made with 6 schools from the country including TCS, but this year the school had enough resources and integrates to make its own team to compete in national and international events.

“We have 3 departments, one is Mechanics and they are in charged of the design and building the moving parts of the robot…then we have the programming department which is basically the coding for the robot to move using java…and the last department is marketing which they have to get sponsors, money and do all logistics in the events,” Julian Zuñiga, TCS Robotics Club teacher, said.

Each department has specific tasks they must complete, programmers must code the robots movement on java using the WP Lib. Mechanics must use various materials for more efficiency both in display and action, and the marketing team has to get all the popularity in order for sponsors to contact The Lighting Blue Lizards.

“Right know we have the pre-season so we don’t know how the tournament is going to be because they will only give us the specs, so right now the students are just learning and getting the skills in order for when the competitions starts… we have only six weeks and they can start building it,” Julian Zuñiga, said.

Students and teachers are focusing on learning basic skills in order to perform well on the pre-season and on the Regionals or any future competition. “As students from The Columbus School we want to leave a legacy”, Gabriel Vallejo, said.

“We are shaping many carriers, some have chosen to take the path of the STEM fields… they’re very passionate about it,” Gabriel Vallejo, said.
