Award Night Sees Schools Sports Starts Recognized

New innovative intention to recognize athletes at TCS begin as the sports night awards ceremony, a first for the TCS community, seeks to honor HS athletes and their achievements throughout the year.

It’s the first time that the school is celebrating the sports prowess with a special event in appreciation of all athletes inside the TCS community. These awards are going to be held May 24th, here at the school. The intention of the evening is to highlight the balance athletes have between sports and academics.

“Those students that participated in HS Copa Columbus and/or Binationals would be invited to the sports night awards,” said TCS sport director Freddie Badillo.

The planning for these awards is extensive but it has not yet started. Logistics of the event would be primarily done by the athletic council, with the guidance of sport director Freddie Badillo that has 20 years of experience. For now there are some ideas on the table that need development. The Athletic council is planning to have them in the theatre and for the evening to be some kind of a gala.

“It would be in the theater, students would come dressed to impress, parents would be invited too, there would be music by band members, and skits from the theater department,” said Badillo.

Regarding the award part of the evening primarily there would be three awards per team. Those awards would be MVP (most valuable player), MIP (most improved player) and Coaches award. As to team awards there would be an award for the team that has the highest GPA (average). Looking to the future there would be a plaque with the winners names in the coliseum. Ceremonies might look different in other schools like CNG (Colegio Nueva Granada in Bogotá).

“Awards have been done for at the school [CNG] for over 9 years now; it’s a serious and organized ceremony, a gala night were students athletes have recognition with their school community,” said CNG sport director Andres Silva.

It’s not only important to recognize the entire team for their titles even though these are very important but to acknowledge that winning isn’t as important as to learning what sports can teach you.

“We seek not only to highlight the first, second, third place, but what sports means and the dedication that the students put on,” said Silva.
