Dancing for a Purpose

Dancing presentation by a group of 7th graders, takes place in the school’s theater, in honor of its namesake, Susan Jaramillo, and the forty years she invested in the benefit and growth of the school.

Friday the 29th of September, a group of seventh grade girls presented their dance play to a specific public of the Columbus with the purpose of honoring Jaramillo and her hard work in the school. This group of girls was composed by nine seventh grade in which included Lolita Saldarriaga, Sofia Gaviria, Helena Hoyos, Valentina Garces, Maria Hinestroza and four more. Together, with the company of Dioger Yarce, Middle School Art teacher, and Marta Vargas, seventh grade Spanish teacher, created this wonderful performance that was an honor for the school.

“About a week ago, a group of seventh graders had the opportunity to perform a small choreography in the assembly to honor Miss. Susan’s forty years of work in The Columbus School. It was created by the Spanish teacher, Marta Vargas and myself. She brought the theater and I brought the dance, which ended being a beautiful show. ” said Yarce.

This performance was cooked in a very short amount of time, now that the occasion only gave the girls counted rehearsals, but still managed to pull it off with excellence.

“We lasted less than a week and a half creating this scheme; we managed to get this out in less than three lunches, since most of us already had some kind of experience with dancing. Also as much as Dioger and Marta already had very clear idea of what they wanted to project in the presentation.” stated Barbara Correa member of the dancing group.

What made this performance magical was that it wasn’t just a simple dance where they just moved to a song at a specific rhythm. This dance had a backstory that made the show have an intention, leading the audience to feel something and understand every move and sensation the group of dancers were trying to transmit and project.

“We danced Merengue, it was very fluid, very calm but had a symbology, since it had a story behind everything. It all began with a Ana Mercedes on a lonely beach, chopping out Margarita’s petals, saying ‘he loves me’ ‘he does not love me’ ending up in a ‘does not love me’ leading Ana to ‘faint’ and us as friends wanting to cheer her up. From there the music began and the dance emerged.” said Saldarriaga, participant of the dance.

Although it was a show that was developed in a very short amount of time, as much as the girls as the audience, enjoyed of a wonderful evening, full of mixed feelings, perspectives and sensations. Every person whom attended to this special event left with something new in their soul and hearts.

“It was a very beautiful ceremony, although it was nostalgic, there were many feelings encountered with each other and each one of us left with something totally new and beautiful from this event. ” expressed with happiness, Ana Mercedes Restrepo, main character of the big show.
