A Professional Musician in the Making

Four year old Camilo Maldonado from Medellin plays joyfully with his friends, jumping and singing. As he sings A la Rueda Rueda de Pan y Canela, his Kindergarten Music teacher sees a great potential in his voice asking little Maldonado to join The Columbus School’s choir. This was the root of Maldonado’s musical career.

Since the early ages, Camilo Maldonado, a 2016 Columbus School senior, has been a great musician who keeps fighting to make his dream of being a professional musician come true. Before, he attended lots of music courses throughout the time he was a school student like Choir, Digital Audio Production and Rock Band. Now, as an academic, he studies Biomedical Engineering and attends a series of music courses in EAFIT University in Medellin, Antioquia.

As he undergoes various music lessons at EAFIT called Nivelatorios, including learning the pure basics of music, piano lessons, master classes and the history of music, he says he wants to fulfil his dream about being a professional musician.

“My intentions after the Nivelatorios is to do the undergraduate program and continue my career as a professional musician.” Maldonado said.

These Nivelatorios are programs before the Undergraduate courses to make sure students are at the correct knowledge level. These will help Camilo become a music graduate and hopefully a great musician.

“They are music lessons at EAFIT University consisting of a program previous to undergraduate courses where we learn the pure basics along with piano lessons, master classes, history of the music and more.” Maldonado added.

On the verge to become a professional, he manages to play an awesome sum of 3 instruments; Violin, piano and saxophone. He also manages to sings a little and has the ability to produce and edit audio production.

Throughout the years he has developed a wonderful music taste and is into classical, rock and symphonic music. Also he found great passion in what he does, which gives him satisfaction and liberation while he is playing, singing or producing.

“From music, what I like the most is how liberating and powerful it is; it won’t only change a mood but it may also change an ideology, describe a concept, detonate history and transcend beyond what is imaginable.”

Camilo is an active musician who has performed in front of hundreds of people, he says he’s not afraid of it, he’s mostly grateful and anxious to show his talent and make people happy and amuse people with his music.

“I’ve performed at Estudio de Pianos Andres Naranjo, Casa Teatro El Poblado and a few more recitals in EAFIT. This is setting apart the countless times I performed in front of the students of TCS in Thanksgiving, Christmas…” Camilo said.

Camilo’s family has alway been really proud of him given the fact that he has been a really dedicated human being with the music, he has been level-headed with all the responsibilities that taking all of those courses in TCS and Eafit.

“My brother has always been a really intelligent person who takes pride in what he does and gives his best in order to fulfil his dream.” Manuela Maldonado, Camilo’s sister said.

Not only he has the responsibility that falls on his shoulders on keeping up with his music program, he also has full time classes on Biomedical Engineering who currently is on third semester. He has been a great student with really good grades.

“Camilo has been really good at managing his time and making the best out of it. I admire him because of his outstanding intelligence and being able to manage the stress and huge responsibility that studying this difficult career and doing this music courses imply.” Manuela said.

Camilo Maldonado has been an outstanding student who takes pride on everything he does and he is someone who has intelligence by heaps. He is a person who has conviccion and can be a role model for fellow musicians who have the same dream as Camilo, liberating his soul through music. Surely TCS is proud to graduate students with Camilo’s qualities.

“My advice for other young musicians, is to always pursue your dream and to have conviction and be proud about what you can do. Also the words “I’m lazy” should not exist in your vocabulary.” Camilo Maldonado said.
