Magic Room Used to its Potential

K4 Students have the huge privilege to have the Magic Room, a space built exclusively for kids to express themselves with art, located near the elementary buildings.

The Magic Room was built about two years ago with the purpose to provide a space for the students to work and learn about art. It has been a great success and it is loved by the students.

“The magic room is a place where these kids can learn in a more hands on way, rather that a more standard way. I believe that at this age this type of learning is way better than the rest.” Javier Vélez, K4 English teacher, said

Javier is one of the english teachers of K4, and it is during his class that these kids are taken to the room. Working with materials and tools, really helps the kids learn in a way they had never done before. A more interactive way of learning is better for kids, specially at this age. They work in this room speaking exclusively in English as well, increasing the amount of practice they are getting . A variety of skills are being developed here as well.

“Mostly they work to be more creative, but also they are constantly practicing their communication skills, because they are forced to communicate with each other and with us the teachers, also they are improving their motor skills by working with tools and materials.” Pilar Acosta, K4C teacher, said.

This open and free space allows them to interact with the world in a more realistic way, improving their ability to function in the real world. Working in teams and pairs, encourage them to use their communication skills, forcing them to talk in english is also something very important. And finally their motor skills will improve due to the handling of tools and other building materials, an important aspect to work early on as a kid. And major projects are to be worked on here in this space.

“They will be working exclusively with recycled materials, and they will be building a city with everything a city has. This will take place later this year or at the beginning of 2019.” Acosta, said.

A big project is coming up most likely at the end of this year, if not at the beginning of 2019. All K4 students will be involved and they will be designing and constructing a city, exclusively out of recycled materials, they will get from the recycling sector of the school. So not only is this space a place where they work and grow as kids, but also a fun and creative space for them to express themselves with art.

“Most of the time we look up materials around the school and we just build, it is a lot of fun.” Martín Garces, a K4 student, said.
