Security Council, Peace and Security in Africa

The Security Council began to debate solutions to improve peace and security in Africa with the goal of increasing the self-sufficiency.

The delegations within the committee discussed reforming laws for the private sector, military aid, peacekeeping missions and education. One of the major priorities that all the delegations have agreed to was that the solutions have to make Africa a self sufficient continent and not dependent on other nations.

“Nigeria proposes the creation of programs that manage to turn Africa into self-sufficient countries,” Andres Duque De Greif, Delegate of Nigeria, said.

Delegations from Nigeria and Iran argued that the first step towards peace in Africa is reestablishing the laws to regain control over their own nations. Currently, many areas on the African continent are not controlled by governments, but by rebel and criminal organizations.

“The hunger problem is caused by the rebels of the country, that stop the sources from getting to the civilians, ” Martin Zuluaga, Delegate of  South Sudan, said.

Furthermore, they asserted that if they get military aid first and peace maintain programs they will not be able to keep the peace after the helpers leave because they did not have peace in the first place, they want long term solutions.  On the other hand, delegations such as the United States of America said that military aid is urgent for the people and then a long term solution can be proposed.

A country with such level of violence such as the one in Africa can`t be sustainable at the moment, long term solutions are indeed necessary but the more time it takes the more casualties there are, this delegation will not seat  and watch when people lose their life,” Sofia Urrea, Delegate of the United States, said.

Iran pointed out that a clear violation of human rights is happening in African countries as an effect of  verigerant groups dominating parts of the territory of the country so the government can’t control and respond for what happens there. As a result delegations suggest to strengthen the rule of law. The actions of the belligerent groups make it hard for other countries to send aid because  of the transportation devices that bring them.

“Granting recognition of the use of food as a weapon which is the starvation of citizens as a method of warfare,”Paulina Rios Acosta, Delegate of Iran, said.

France and United States are willing to help the African nations and think they can do so by concentrating more on the troops and upgrading their technology Corruption can be solved with education, train the military and of course help with military aid.

Delegations have also taken in consideration that in the past private companies have sponsored illegal armed groups. Also, delegations have considered that these groups found their operations by the extractions of mineral.

“This delegation considered that is fundamental imposing regulations to the multinational enterprises by the internal jurisdiction of every African state. They are acting in an illegal way by financing the illegal armed groups by  buying them natural resources extracted from African lands,” Camilo Rengifo, Delegate of Saudi Arabia, said.

“”Even though all nations present in the committee aspire to achieve a peaceful nation there are problems that interrupt this process.”  Martin Zuluaga Chavez, Delegate of South Sudan said.
