The Mine

The Cerrejon coal mine in La Guajira, Colombia is the biggest open mine in the world.  The problem is that it is using a lot of water and people in La Guajira are dying of hunger and dehydration. The mine wants to change the course of another river to go to the mine so they can spray it on the ground so no deadly chemicals go into the air and harm people, animals and flora and fauna. This river is where Wayuú indigenous communities, get their water to drink and to do everyday things. This photo shows the mine with huge trucks that are always going in and out with coal. One type of truck carries water and it goes all over the mine spraying it on the ground. One way to solve this problem is to use salt water because the mine is near the sea.
