Guajira

Guajira. A desert region in northern Colombia. It has been facing an environmental sustainability issue recently. The problem increased with Cerrejon. The mine has helped the region to develop, but it has brought bad things such as plastic, and water contamination. Through years, the mine has deviated various rivers and one main river, Rio Rancheria, to increase production. This meant that settlements throughout the region went out of their water supply. This communities moved to more modern ways of life, in which most of the things are disposable. The biggest issue here is that there is no responsible way in which garbage is treated because sanitary landfills are not available in that region of the country. This leads to garbage being thrown away to the ground and gets carried away by the wind, to later end up in the outskirts of towns, only to stay there for thousands of years.
