El Cerrejon

I want to report the land exploitation of the land of the Guajira. Guajira is a department in the north of Colombia that has been a victim of coal mining’s negative impacts. I want to show how the company is using top of the line technology and construction machines but it is causing a bad impact on the land. Animals are harmed when land is taken for mining. Native species could go extinct due to disruption of food webs with predator and prey. The length of a tajo (mining pit) is 1,000 football fields and a height of a 40 story building. This is a huge amount of land that has been taken from the department that can never be returned. Although El Cerrejon (the coal mine) has been able to achieve mine reclamation, there is another side to the story about a land that can never be rehabilitated to its natural state. You see the slogan “Mineria Responsable” (Responsible Mining), but you don’t see the secretive actions that are happening there. I think the solution to this problem is to get experts to help to achieve a better recuperation process for each category of problems. I also urge Colombian politicians to create laws which reduce exploitation of lands, which could allow mining but in a reduced and transparent ways.
